Florence Nightingale is the pioneer of modern nursing, known as the 'Lady with the Lamp'. Born on 12 May 1820 in Florence, Italy, she died in London on 13 August 1910.

  • In 1860 she founded the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas' Hospital, London, to establish nursing as a full profession.
  • During the Crimean War (1853-1856) she treated wounded soldiers, working by day and tending the wounded at night.
  • In 1883 Queen Victoria awarded her the Royal Red Cross.
  • She was the first woman to receive the Order of Merit, in 1907.
  • In 1908 she received the Freedom of the City of London.
